Hunger Games

Have you guys read this yet? Wow. It was really good. I get the feeling it could replace Twilight in the Mommies Who Love Young Adult Fiction Craze.

I am already Team Peeta.

Seriously, though. It's good. And so far I've only read the first book in a series of three, but I'm already anticipating the movie.

It's set is a dystopian future, and centers around a teenage girl, who, at times, is annoyingly unaware of the affections of others, but still manages to have a personality, and even some real fight in her (I'm looking at you Bella Swan).

My brother-in-law (a high school english teacher) says it's all the rage right now with the kids. Keiko, can you confirm?

It's a really fast read (finished 400+ pages in just a few hours) but it's also deeper than just the surface violence and romance. There are real themes here. Even tropes! I LOVE tropes! (Just being a literature nerd for a second there).

If you read it, let me know. I want to discuss this one with others.

  1. I can confirm the popularity, however it is mainly teachers I know who have read it and like it. Remember, I teach the AP kids who pretend reading Satre and Dickens is weekend reading.

    I finished the book in a couple days and I already have the second book in the series.

    Renee is also correct about that fact that though it is for younger crowds there is definite style and finesse on the writer's part. Basically, she can write. Oh, how I appreciate that in a YA writer.

  3. Erin, honestly, it's way beyond anything S. Meyer could hope to achieve. It's a genuinely good book. I'm just saying that somehow it's struck a nerve with a lot of women I know. I think it has to do with the way she writes about the way a teenage girl feels when she's working through her first "romance". But seriously, you will fall in love with some of the characters in this book, but not in a gross "I want to make out with a 17-yr-old wolf" kind of way. I loved Cinna. Keiko, don't you love Cinna? I imagine him to be like Christian Siriano (project runway) or something.

  4. totally nothing like twilight except for the genre. my book club read it last year and we all loved it so much (rarity) that we decided to pick the sequel for another month. it's a really interesting concept. kinda like reality tv meets a bit of romance. just a bit. a really small bit. this would be a great pick and give people lots to talk about. the sequel just came out this past september though and the third installment isn't out yet.

    cinna=siriano for sure.

  8. That's funny Lindsay. I'm am NOT Team Katniss at all. She can be so dense.

    I love Gale, don't get me wrong. I think that either way, I will be disappointed in who she ends up with. Maybe Prim will grow up a little, and Peeta will fall for her, and everyone will be happy.

    They are making these books into movies. I think I'm going to nerd out a little for it.

    Erin, just to be clear, I'm not fighting to make you love this one though. It's definitely still YA lit.
